Here's a pic of Will's bandaged hand. This is from his birthday party. More happy birthday related pics later.
Last Sunday we had the joy of going to the Emergency Room.
It was a terrible ending to the very long week we had.
Earlier in the week, Will had a cold. He slept little, and coughed much.
Earlier in the day, Will had a bout of constipation. He pooped little, and cried much. Everyone wanted to hold him and help him which only added fuel to the fire. Oh yeah, and it was nap time. Adding to this day, we had Church, then Andy's Grandma's 80th birthday party (which is where the pooping crisis occurred), and finally we ended at Andy's sister's house for a last birthday gathering. The latter being the scene of injury.
Apparently Will decided to try to get on the treadmill with his older cousin, Josie. Yeah, not a good idea. I heard him cry, went running, and found him holding out his hand. There was definitely skin missing. We quickly loaded up for a trip to the ER. I held my poor baby in the backseat. He only cried for about 5 minutes of the trip and then the little man was fast asleep.
Luckily, we didn't wait long in the ER. After a few X-Rays they determined nothing was broken, which was my main concern. He got cleaned and bandaged up. He really was a trooper. Actually, I think he was so exhausted he couldn't muster up the strength it took to cry.
The damage is on his left hand, ring finger and pinkie finger. The ring finger is the worst.
I followed up with his ped. office last week. Our ped. was out, but they had a look. We are to go back again for a final check. However, in the mean time, Andy was telling his boss about Will. He referred one of his pediatric surgeon friends at Children's Memorial in Chicago to Andy. Andy had a few phone calls with them on Friday. They were incredibly helpful, and asked for pictures of the injury. Andy emailed pics that night. We received a phone call last night. They are concerned there may be nerve damage, and think that it looks like a 3rd degree burn. I am calling our Ped. tomorrow to see about getting an ointment or cream to treat the wound as a burn. Adding to their concern of nerve damage is the fact that Will rarely cries or reacts when we change his bandage. He also has never cried while using his hand bandaged. Motrin or Tylenol have never been necessary for any pain. In fact, you would think that he simply had a scrape by the way he acts with it. The only bit that I think bothers him is when he sees it. At that point he refuses to move his fingers and will quickly ask us to put a new one on. They are also concerned that due to the nature and location of the wound that Will may possibly need a skin graft later on. Yeah, fun! So, as I said I will be following up on all of this. And, yes I'm kicking myself for not being in the room to stop this from happening!

He looks like he's REALLY concentrating on his card! How cute...hope the hand starts doing better.
My Noah had an accident on ours when he was two. His arm, and leg were left skinless in many areas. No nerve damge, and no skin grafts. It looks perfect today. Hope it heals fast!
